Amazon KDP Royalty Calculator

A free calculator that shows what you actually keep from each sale on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. Choose Kindle, paperback or hardcover, enter your list price and page count, and it returns your royalty per copy, the printing or delivery cost Amazon deducts, your margin as a share of list price, and how many copies you need to sell to cover what you spent on the cover, editing and advertising.

How the numbers are worked out

Printed books are manufactured on demand, and Amazon takes the printing cost out of every sale. The printing cost is a fixed charge plus a per-page charge that depends on the ink you choose and how long the book is, so a long colour interior can cost more to print than a short book sells for. Your royalty is a percentage of the list price with that printing cost subtracted.

Kindle books work differently. You pick either a 35% or a 70% royalty rate. The higher rate is only available inside a set price band and carries a delivery charge based on the size of your file, which means a heavily illustrated book earns less per sale than a plain text one at the same price.

What it will not tell you

It does not estimate Kindle Unlimited income. Those pages are paid from a fund whose value changes every month, so a fixed figure would be a guess dressed up as a number. It also covers the amazon.com store only, because other marketplaces have their own rate cards and an approximation would be worse than an honest gap.

Write the book, then price it

KDPBot generates the manuscript, cover and KDP-ready files for the book you are pricing here. See the pricing page for plans and pay-as-you-go credits.
